Insurance:

There are so many companies offering car hire in Florida that it is easy to be confused by it all.  However, it is really quite simple for British travellers as the packages have been specifically designed to include everything you will legally need to drive in Florida. 

There are two packages.  The Standard package will include all of the insurances you will need to drive in Florida, the airport fees and local state taxes that are required to be paid and unlimited mileage.  Some providers will also include one extra driver free in this package which makes an economical package for a family or couple.  Fuel is not included in this package - you pay for a tank of fuel on arrival and then return the vehicle empty at the end of your trip. or pick the car up full and return it full (depending on provider) for no extra charge.  We have called this our STANDARD package

The upgraded package (known under many names depending on the particular supplier) is once again, basically the same.  It includes all of the above insurances, airport fees, local and state taxes, unlimited mileage and either 3  or all additional drivers (again, depends on supplier) and an initial tank of fuel.  This is a good option if you need more than 2 drivers, or are only going to have the car for a week or two (particularly with current fuel prices).  We have called this our Diamond package for all suppliers to avoid confusion.

Please be aware that to purchase anything at the desk in the airport is going to be expensive, for instance if you are unsure whether or not you need an upgrade to a larger car, you should be paying for it BEFORE you arrive at the airport, what might cost you a few pounds when you book will cost much more at the desk.  This if for two reasons.  1) our rentals are bought bulk for cheapness, and 2) any thing that is paid for locally will incur local and state sales tax as well as an airport fee.

What is NOT included

On October 1st 2008 Orlando International Airport implemented a Customer Facility Charge. All Clients collecting cars from the Alamo rental desk will incur a charge locally at the time of collection. The cost of the charge will be $2.50 plus tax for each day of the car hire to a maximum of $12.50 plus tax. This charge has been implemented by Orlando International Airport and has now been incorporated by most suppliers, but is not included within Alamo packages.

Any additional insurances that you take out at the location and sign for on the car rental document, can not be reclaimed, even if you were not aware that you had agreed to the insurance. The onus is on you, the customer, to check your rental document at the location very carefully. If you are not sure about a charge, do not sign for it until it has been explained to you and you are happy to go ahead. The desk clerks are paid a commission for every additional item they sell, and this can occasionally result in some heavy sell tactics.
